Today was picture day. Kindergarten brought their best smiles :)  Today we talked about Terry Fox and read the story, "Terry Fox and Me". We talked about Terry's dream of running across Canada and shared our own dreams. We used watercolour pencil crayons and decorated a shoe in honour of our own dreams in hopes that we can be like Terry and accomplish our goals.  We had snack outside and playground time to enjoy the beautiful fall weather. We wrote in our journals today. We practiced printing the words I like and drew pictures about things that we like.  **NO school tomorrow due to National Day for Truth and Reconciliation** Please bring in a small bag of leaves for Monday October 4th. Today was Orange shirt day. We watched a video  Orange Shirt Day that talked about why we wear orange shirts on September 30.  We read the story, " My Heart Fills With Happiness " and talked about what fills our heart with happiness. See your child's answers below. We mixed red and yellow paint to make orange paint and painted our own orange shirt in our visual journals. We had music with Mrs. Coulson. Tomorrow is Orange Shirt Day - please wear your orange shirt to show your support that every child matters.  We will be painting with orange paint ... please do not wear your best clothes tomorrow.  Painting in Kindergarten is messy! If anyone has any sunflowers in their yards that they would be willing to donate to Kindergarten, please send them to school on Monday.  We would love to create a science exploration center using the sunflowers.  If you have any questions, about this, please contact your child's teacher.  Thank you for considering our request! We started our day with arrival centers.  We talked about the month of September and all of the "firsts" that came with September. If anyone has any sunflowers in their yards that they would be willing to donate to Kindergarten, please send them to school on Monday.  We would love to create a science exploration center using the sunflowers.  If you have any questions, about this, please contact your child's teacher.  Thank you for considering our request! Today we had a great day at school!  We had a fabulous walk to teepee forest.  We used our 5 senses at teepee forest to investigate.  We touched natural items that were bumpy, smooth, big and small.  We listened to birds and airplanes.  We saw trees, bushes, berries, leaves and rocks.  Please ask your child what they enjoyed most about teepee forest. Today we read, "The Family Book" by Todd Parr. We talked about our own families. We drew pictures of our families in our blue journals and practiced our writing by telling about our favourite thing to do with our family with our swirly printing, swirl combo and letter printing. We are working on using any letter sounds we know and writing them down. We talked about our 5 senses. We played two games that practiced our sense of sight and hearing. We played a sight memory game where we looked a 5 different objects and then closed our eyes and had to tell which item was missing. You can practice this game at home. We played a guess the sound game. We heard a sound then had to draw our guess on the whiteboard. We had a lot of fun playing this game!  Today was a great day at school!  September 21st is International Peace Day.  Kindergarten had the chance to sing "Peace in My Fingers" on the intercom to the rest of the kids in the school.  We are great singers!  Please try the song at home if you like!   Peace In My Fingers We read the story "The Peace Book" by Todd Parr and made a peace quilt.  Please ask your child what peace looks like to them.   We talked about the number 2 and where in our world we see the number two and talked about pairs. We practiced writing 2 and did number 2 art.  Important note for Kindergarten meet and greet on September 24th.  Additional time slots have been added to the conference manager.  These new time slots are listed as " Mask #2 – Kindergarten Meet and Greet Sept 24".  Please note that all 3 kindergarten teachers will be available at all 3 meet and greet times, choose the meet and greet session that is most convenient for your schedule. Today we started our day with new arrival centers.  We read the story, "Our Class is a Family" and talked about our classroom community and our own families. We drew pictures of our family. We practiced sorting objects into groups. We then found 5 objects around the class and sorted them from smallest to biggest, shortest to tallest. Have your child find items at home and sort them by size.  We played outside and had centers.  Reminders: - No school  Friday - PD Day - Virtual Open House/ Meet the Teacher is next Thursday Sept. 23.  Friday, September 17 We had a great walk to Teepee forest. While we were there we read some stories and we looked for items that would be big to an ant but small for a moose. We also used magnifying glasses to look closely. We read the story, "Be Who You Are" by Todd Parr and talked about what makes us unique. We used sharpie markers and drew a self portrait like Todd Parr would draw. After drawing, we used water colours  to paint in our portraits.  We played at centers.  Ask your child what was their highlight of the week. Have a wonderful weekend! Today was a great day at school!  We learned about the number 1.  Please enjoy the  Number 1 song .  We turned our number 1 into a snake and practiced printing the number 1. We used loose parts today.  Parents, you may have been wondering what we mean by loose parts when you hear your children refer to them. Loose parts are a fabulous way to engage imaginative play and connect to many different areas of learning. Our kindergarten children will become very familiar with loose parts as the school year progresses.  Loose parts can include gems, buttons, rocks, corks, popsicle sticks, pom poms, really anything that you may have in your junk drawer! Today we used the loose parts to show Kindness.  Please ask your child what loose parts they explored with today. We had music with Mrs. Coulson.  Please ask your child what your child did in music.
