Kindergarten Music - Sept

Hello Kindergarten!!! I am Jennele Coulson and I teach you (your student) music twice a week.  We have so much fun together.  At the end of every month you can expect a post from me keeping you up to date with that we have been working on in music class.  I have so much to update you on.

At Eric Harvie there is a huge focus on peace songs.  We began the year by learning one of our favourites. It is called Peace in My Fingers.  You can listen to the song here, Peace In My Fingers. Can you teach your parents the actions?  On Sept. 21, the international day of Peace we sang this song for the whole school over the intercom and we did an amazing job!  We also have been listening to a song called the Peacemaker Song.  You can check this song out by clicking here, Peacemaker.  Peace education will be woven through all that we do.

We have played around with the different things we can do with our voice and understanding our speaking vs. our singing voice.  Our sweet flying squirrel, Scruffy, helps us out with that.  He will do anything you ask as long as you sing it to him.

We love to play instruments in kindergarten so we have been experimenting with as many of the percussion instruments that we have. We use them to help us keep the beat and play the way the words go (rhythm).

Most recently we have been introduced to different rhythms.  We used popsicle sticks to show how many "claps" we hear on each beat (one or two), then we learned that we can actually read music using these lines.  We added dots to the bottom and tied some together at the top.  We named the one stick "ta" and the two sticks tied together "ti-ti".  We have been working on strengthening our understanding and ability to feel those two rhythms.

Most recently, we have been talking about Fall.  We have been experimenting with movement and our body, pretending to be leaves in the breeze.  We used our body to sing scales at the leaves floated down to the ground.  We made our own fall leaves and use them to create and write for the first time, our own compositions.
